| NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS | | Global OFW deployment, dollar remittances grow despite global crisis | The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) today confirmed that both the global deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dollar remittances to the country's economy have continued to increase notwithstanding the global financial crisis (GFC). Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito D. Roque cited the latest report of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas that despite the global financial slowdown, OFW remittances from more than 190 host countries worldwide reached more than US$1.265 billion in January 2009, representing a positive 0.1 percent growth from the same period in 2008. read more at dole.gov.ph | | Employment up by 3.1 % | Employment in the country rose in April 2007 by 3.1 percent with 1.007 million new employed workers, increasing the total employment in the country to 33.706 million from 32.699 million in April 2006. Acting Labor and Employment Secretary Danilo P. Cruz said that based on the April 2007 Labor Force Survey of the National Statistics Office, all three broad sectors recorded positive employment growth rates with agriculture, fishery and forestry sector posting the highest growth rate at 5.1% or 570,000, followed by the service sector at 2.6% or 416,000, and the industry sector at 0.4% or 20,000. read more at dole.gov.ph |
